Recent advancements have made carbon fibre nearly equal in strength to aluminium, but these innovative technologies typically come at a high price. For when durability, strength, and budget are the top three things on your list for new wheels, nothing beats aluminium as the material of choice. With this in mind, we set out to create an alloy disc wheelset that features many of the desired qualities found in a carbon wheel, like low weight, stiffness, and a clean aesthetic, but with the durability to train and race both on- and off-road. In the end, our SLX 24 Disc wheelset came out as a lightweight, durable wheelset that’s ready for whatever you throw at it.

The wide profile of the SLX 24 Disc is what really sets them apart from others in the same weight category. Here, most wheels are much narrower internally, a flaw that impairs a proper tire/rim match, but the 20mm internal rim width of the SLX 24s have them pair nicely with road and 'cross tires alike. This match allows for lower rolling resistance due to the ability to run lower pressures and wider tires. Lower pressures with wider tires and rims is somewhat of a new concept, but can greatly improve ride quality and performance. Wide rims allow for more air volume in the tire, and with more air, less pressure is needed to have the same resistance to pinch flats. This provides you with a suppler ride without the risk of flats both on- and off-road.

On the performance side of things, less pressure equates to less rolling resistance via the tire soaking up road imperfections rather than bouncing over them. When too much pressure is in a tire, without realizing it, your bike will ever-so-slightly spring over road imperfections, wasting precious watts—but lower pressures soak up these bumps and keeps your power strictly for forward movement. Less pressure also dramatically improves grip, inspiring confidence when the road gets twisty.

Even with a budget-friendly price in mind, we made sure not to compromise quality with the build. We start with 24-millimeter-deep rims that are constructed of high-quality aluminium alloy that offers both low weight and incredible durability. The use of quality alloy sets the tone for the rest of the build—quality. We hand-lace our rims to the same aero disc (AFD) hubs that you find on our top-end carbon models via 24 DT Swiss Competition spokes, resulting in a respectable 1515-gram wheelset. Building wheels by hand is a practice that's becoming scarce, but being fully invested in making the best wheels means that we know hand-built wheels provide a level of quality unmatched by machines. Machines miss little discrepancies that humans catch, and these are the flaws that make the difference between a good and a prestigious wheelset.

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense wheelset that you can race and train on with equal aplomb, without worrying about reliability, look no further than our SLX 24 Disc wheelset.

Responsive design w/ aero hubs but both original and replacement rear cracked at spoke nipples

The SLX-24 wheels are on my 2018 Roubaix. The road feel of these wheels is very good, even with 28mm GP5000s inflated to 90PSI. However, the rim of the original rear wheel started cracking at four of the spoke nipples at 3,200mi. One crack was major at ~8mm a side and affected the trueness; the other minor at 3mm. The wheels were replaced under warranty. The new rear wheel (now with updated aero hub design) started exhibiting the same type of cracking at 3,600mi. Again, now a year later, Specialized agreed to replace them under warranty; I chose an upgrade with discount. I'm a 87kg cyclist who uses the Roubaix on the road -not gravel, so I expect greater wheel endurance. In my opinion, the base of the rim design should be strengthened by thickening the cross section, or by adding washers at the spoke nipple heads to spread out the load forces. A small compromise of the additional weight of the rear wheel for greater durability would be appreciated by most users.

Parabens!

Great wheelset

These came on my Roubaix. A definite upgrade in looks and performance vs the DT Swiss. They look great and a sturdy. No problems after a year of riding.

Performed Well but Started Cracking After 11,000 Miles

The SLX 24 is the OEM wheel set on my 2018 Roubaix Expert UDi2. I found it to be a very responsive and durable alloy wheel set--durable in that it took some jolts from typical pavement defects and stayed true. However, after about 11,000 miles I noticed cracks extending outwards from a spoke hole along the circumference of each rim while washing the bike. The cracks were about a half inch long on the rear wheel and just starting to emerge on the front. Specialized stood behind their product and provided warranty replacements (two-year warranty). I have about 1,000 miles on the replacement wheel set with no problems.

High quality, durable wheels

These were OEM wheels on the 2018 Specialized Roubaix Comp. With the 28mm turbo tires, they spin up for accelerations well. After over 6000 miles of road use, they are still true, and have no deflection.

Your research ends here. These are your wheels.

I bought these wheels for my 2015 SW Tarmac Disc with the mindset that they would just be a placeholder and I'd eventually buy carbon wheels. A bike of that caliber needs carbon wheels, right? Debatable. I will say, I still consider carbon wheels. Who doesn't want them? However, these have impressed me to the point of wondering why they're so ""necessary."" They have a lot of the same features of their carbon counterparts, but for redonkulously less money. Ride quality is on point with similar rim widths to the CLX line-up. They spin up super fast without that ""dragging an anchor"" feeling that some alloy wheels can give. Plus, they look pretty sweet. One day, I might still get those carbon hoops for my Tarmac. IF that day comes, these wheels would go on my 'cross bike because I can't bear the thought of not riding them in some capacity. Whatever ends up happening with me doesn't matter... just know that these are definitely not placeholders.

A wheel for all the (not Heavy) Metal fans!

I bought these rims because we all know that a good wheelset is the best upgrade you can make on a bike. Carbon wheels are as expensive as they are sexy but remain out of reach for many mortals, including me, because they cost as much as many of our bikes. Enter the SLX 24 Aluminium wheels. Compared to something like the Carbon CLX 32, you are looking at around a 240 gram weight penalty, for a $1600 savings. I have these wheels on a steel gravel bike, and boy do they make a difference. These wheels climb great and their light weight is especially noticeable upon acceleration. They made my bike a lot snappier without adding any harshness to the ride. Want to improve the ride of your bike? Want to keep some $ in your pocket book? Get these (non Heavy) Metal wheels. They rock!
