Don't worry, S-Works doesn't get to have all of the fun—the new Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 29 features the same frame with a full 11m carbon chassis and rear-end as its older brother, but with a solid list of no-fuss components for an everyman's budget.

Our design goal for the new Stumpjumper was simple—build the ultimate trail bike, one that feels telepathic. And it turns out that this feeling all comes down to stiffness. Think of it this way: when the frame's telling your hands one thing and your feet another, your brain gets confused with the imbalance and the bike feels unstable. In order to fix this, we had to get to work on dialing-in the materials, shapes, and the layout.

We started by creating our own mountain-specific stiffness test, and then we looked at the layout with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to see where we could get the biggest stiffness improvements. This led to a big discovery: The Large and X-Large frames needed more front-end stiffness while the Smalls and Mediums were just fine. We were able to create a frame design that was 20% more efficient. And in the end, this proved to be one of the lightest trail frames on the market, today.

When designing the frame with the stiffness targets being a main goal, we developed a radical new sidearm design. The front-end and rear-end are connected at three points, and the sidearm helps keep all these points super stiff and connected, all while taking about 100 grams out of the rear-end. More explicitly, this minimizes frame flex when the rear suspension is active.

We continued down the suspension path with a custom Rx Trail Tune on both the fork and rear shock. Suspension performance is highly dependent on frame, wheel, and rider size, so we use our Rx Tune to get each bike to land in the middle of the adjustment spectrum, and this gives you the biggest possible range to fine-tune your ride. Another focal point of the tune was matching the suspension characteristics between wheel sizes—we developed a specific Rx Tune for each platform. So, no matter what wheel size you prefer, you'll get perfectly linear suspension.

Steps were also taken to make this bike easy to live with. Threaded bottom brackets make a triumphant return, and we made room for up to a 2.6" tire. You're also free to run whatever aftermarket rear shock you want, since we're using standard metric shocks. We revamped the SWAT™ box, too, making it sleeker, lighter, and with more volume. And customization is furthered with a Flip Chip that lets you to dial-in your Stumpy to your riding style. Switch it from High to Low and it drops your bottom bracket 6mm and slackens the head tube by half-a-degree. Little details also jump out to surprise you, like a newly designed ribbed chainstay protector that makes chain slap a thing of the past and nearly silences the drivetrain. Lastly, we seriously couldn't make cable routing any easier on carbon models. Full tubes can be found throughout the carbon frame, so all you have to do is push the cable and it'll come out the other end. No more lazy loop, hidden stashes of magnets, pokey spokes, or pillows to cry in.

The build on this Comp model comes with a list of components that deliver undeniable quality, like a Shimano SLX drivetrain with RaceFace cranks, Shimano SLX disc brakes, FOX front and rear suspension, and Roval Traverse 29 wheels.

It's about time!

Originally was shopping for a Stumpjumper ST bike. Owned a Santa Cruz Hightower and just wanted something with less travel. I have to give credit to my LBS, Sugar Cycles, for making the suggestion to try the Stumpjumper. Glad I did, had no intention to get rid of my Hightower, but after a couple of months I found no need to hold onto that bike. Everything that I was looking for in one bike, the standard Stumpjumper is it. Great suspension with ability to climb. Rides cross country as well as technical trails. Sizing was spot on for my size, 5'6"" medium. Out of the box the Carbon comp is ready to go. However, I have been riding for years and because of that, there where upgrades that I really wanted. Upgraded the wheels to carbon, carbon bar and had some 11 speed XX1 parts that made it onto this bike. Dropped the weight down to 27.9 lbs. with XT pedals. What I have now is a ride with ample suspension for rough rooty trails, but then is light enough to ride on the sidewalk when trails are wet. The best word that I can use to describe this is ""comfortable"". Done a couple of 20+ miles that didn't leave me struggling. True test of a good bike - take that thing for a long ride, when you're all sweaty, tired and you're bike still feels plush; not a brick, homerun man! This has turned out to be a really fantastic bike that I'm really enjoying. Thanks to Sugar Cycles for working with me on making this my bike.

The best Stumpy ever!

This is the 2nd Carbon stumpy in the family. The ever growing 13 yr old rider at 6 foot tall can now confidently attack the most technical sections of Westleigh at speed and recover easily with confidence through the biggest trail challenges.

Most fun bike I've ever owned!

Wow, where do I begin. This bike is awesome, and makes you ride lines you never even thought about on other bikes. I currently own 3 Camber's and have owned a Epic and older Stumpy in the past. This one rips, it climbs amazingly, it's heavier than a XC bike of course at 30 lbs but just claws and sticks to rooty rocky sections like it has glue on the tires. And jumping log overs and small drops are so easy, you can totally blow it and the ft and rear suspension will let you off easy. Dirt jumping, downhill, XC loops, I can't find one single thing about the bike I don't like. It shifts flawlessly, brakes are super strong, turns like its on rails, will climb almost as good as an XC FS bike, floats over rough stuff and when you point it downhill it just makes you smile. I am 5'9"" 170 lbs. riding a medium 29er and have my forks set on 70 psi, damper open, my shock is at 180psi and the flip chip is in the high position with the damper set on the pedal position. Both rebounds are set 6 clicks out from full hard. This is considerably softer than the set up calculator on the web says but I've found the suspension on this bike in particular does way better if you let it move in the stroke a little. I actually rode this bike in a Cat 2 XC race just for fun and finished 2nd. Normally finish similar on my XC bike and had way more fun on the Stumpjumper. If you can only buy one bike this is the one for all around fun.

Trail Weapon

This truly is an outstandingly good bit of kit, on hills I forget I'm riding a full susser the speed you can attack rock gardens with is mind blowing, the set up of the bike is fantastic, you feel one with the bike, I have knocked 10% off my strava times on descents and have beaten a few of my climbs, this is the first 29er I have owned and took a few rides to get used to the wheel size, I only have one crittercism to achieve perfection, I have changed the SLX shifter to an XT one which enables a double downshift, I am very happy with my Stumpy

I LOOOOVE THIS BIKE!

I've had many Stumpys over the years and this one is by far the best. Climbs like a beast, has great geometry for all types of mtn biking, and you can descend with the most confidence!! SWAT is awesome and ya cant go wrong for the money!!! Oh, and the dropper works better than the Command Post. Glad I bought it!
