I can't break it

The SJ is an incredibly versatile, adjustable and sturdy bike that's really opened up playing on the trail for me. That's as opposed to laying down as much speed as possible and aiming to merely survive the downhill, rooty pinball sections. My favorite use case is a long day of old school hardwoods singletrack. An absolute Cadillac on days like that. That said, firming everything up to hammer on more low key stuff is as easy as flicking switches on the fork and shock. The biggest adjustment has been how the bike rides kind of centered/weighted on the front wheel compared to the riding the rear wheel vibe of bikes I'm used to with slacker seat angles. This is in the High BB setting.

Great except hubs

Bought last year, and bike is awesome. I did purchase in offseason a bunch of XX1 and XO1 upgrades however did not realize the rear hub is Shimano HG driver so not compatible with XO1 cassette without rebuilding wheel. Not really happy the tech specs listed on this page leaves out that on the hub descriptions. Otherwise bike is great, well balanced, climbs solid, and floats; I’ll just rebuild wheels after this season so I can take full advantage of other upgrades. Weight wise I’m not missing carbon frame, it’s not terribly noticeable unless you’re doing a lot of climbing.

Great Bike for the price point

This is my first full suspension and it's been fantastic for the price. I've done about 70% single track / technical trails in Virginia and taken it on the downhill trails at Bryce resort a handful of times and it handles it with no problem. I am 6'1, 220lbs and it's a beast for anything I've thrown at it. I did have to replace and upgrade the rear derailleur and rotor after they got mangled together and unsure how. This is the S4 size. Upgrading the handlebars and stem as first upgrade as the handle bars bent in an OTB crash recently.

Stumpy Love... and Maintenance

This bike is a work horse. Loves fast descents and hard climbs. Beautiful geometry and structurally sound. That being said pivot bearings dried out quickly and bottom bracket bearings (SRAM DUB, BSA 73mm, threaded) gave out halfway through second season. The bike was creaking more than my 92-year-old-arthritic-grandfather! Big oversight on Specialized's part, when I discovered a missing washer between the rear shock connection and linkage arm. Specialized's awesome warranty covered this however. Love this bike.

The perfect "not-beginner" bike

I started out on a hardtail rockhopper pro evo from 2016, great bike but wanted to try full sus. Jumped on a direct-to-consumer brand bike that was very entry level - Rockshox recon, base shimano 12-speed 1x drivetrain, and a basic dropper post. It was okay, but I wanted something that I could really grow into, get great performance out of, had a real manufacturers warranty with brick & mortar locations, and most of all was better spec'd. The comp alloy was the best of both worlds, not as expensive as carbon bikes, but still has a surprisingly light alloy frame with what I consider to be a great fork. Wish it had GX at this price range, but other than that I love the bike. Maxxis tires and you're gtg.

My first mountain bike was

My first mountain bike was a Specialized Hardrock and when I finally decided to upgrade to full suspension (29), I’ll be honest, I shopped around with Trek, Santa Cruz, etc. but all that did was confirm that I love Specialized. This Stumpjumper is light (to me - never rode a carbon frame), great components, and specialized has the best color selection. Great handling uphill, downhill and in between. Great bike!

Great Bike! One thing though..

This bike is awesome. It feels nimble yet has all the benefits of a full suspension. The bike is a lot of fun to ride because of it's playfulness and superior climbing. My one concern is the NX derailleur. When pedaling with force uphill there is usually a delay/clunky shifting. Just something to keep in mind.

Great bike

I love this bike, it handles everything really well. Bike park and long pedals it does really well. All the components work great as long as they are adjusted correctly. The reason I gave it 4 stars is that the paint on my bike(I have the satin cast umber/clay colour) chips pretty easily. On the down tube and the chainstays. Next to the chain ring there is a lot of paint missing from what I think is the chain ring hitting at bottom out. Other than that it is a really good playful do it all bike.

Great bike, one issue

I’ve had this bike for a few months now and absolutely love it, it feels really stable on whatever trails I throw at it. I did however find that when you majorly bottom out your shock that the chainring hits the chainstay, this is a massive design failure. Would still 100% recommend bike.

Very happy with this StumpJumper

Upgraded from an alloy StumpJumper circa about 2008. This new bike is lighter, more stable and more nimble. Dropper post easier to use than the after market version I added to the old bike. The 1x drive train is simpler to use than the old 2x version. Flat out great fun to ride on flow trail and keeps its end up over more challenging technical rocks and roots. I added a pair of Crank Bros flat pedals and am very happy with the results. Strongly recommend checking this one out if you are looking for a full suspension bike.

Amazing bike

Love the new bike. Been riding many different brands for years. My wife and kids have Specialized bikes so I bought one. This bike hits the mark in every category. The ride is effortless and more enjoyable than any bike I’ve been on. Takes the ride to a whole new level.

Great bike

I moved to the Stumpjumper Comp Alloy from an 8 year old full suspension. The modern geometry is fantastic and this bike is a lot more playful than my old one. I feel I can get better power down when climbing and the bike is confidence inspiring on the downhills. I have been able to progress my riding a lot over the 6 months of owning it. I'm 6'0'' 185lbs. S4 sizing is great. I was able to demo this bike before buying and tried both the S3 and S5 as well before buying. I added an MRP bash guard that has definitely been worth it. Only upgrade I would consider in the future is the brakes. They are good and entirely competent, but I had high end shimano brakes on the old bike and notice on really steep fast descents that I'd like just a little more- but this is just nit-picking. I ride in New England- plenty of rocks/roots with up and down, true "trail" bike riding. This bike is great and I hang with friends who have bikes twice this price.

Love it

Love this bike, got me into serious single track riding, was able to handle anything I can throw at it including Valemount Bike Park in BC. This is something that I will ride for years to come. My bike is completely stock. The only reason I took one star of is that my rear shock has an issue with lock out switch when switch just moves from fully open into middle position on it's own. It went to Fox for warranty, will see how it goes.
