With the all-new Stumpjumper Expert, we've bottled up that "new bike day" feeling…

How are carbon bikes made? Peter Denk talks Specialized Stumpjumper

Product Details

With the all-new Stumpjumper Expert, we've bottled up that "new bike day" feeling and put it into a radical new trail bike so agile, so lively, so in-tune with the trail, that it feels like an extension of your body. Levitate up the climbs. Decimate the descents. The Stumpjumper Expert is going to make you rethink how a trail bike should ride.

  • THE TRAIL BENCHMARK—When we set out to design the all-new Stumpjumper, we pursued some hefty goals. It had to excel on any kind of trail, for every style of rider. To achieve that, we went after serious weight reduction without sacrificing durability, a stiff, responsive chassis that still rides light and lively, geometry that improves everyone’s riding, and the best suspension kinematics we know how to design. Turns out, you can have your cake and eat it too with the new Stumpjumper.

  • THE SWEETEST 130MM OF TRAVEL YOU’LL EVER RIDE—We massaged the kinematics of the Stumpjumper suspension to bring out the very best all-round performance possible in a 130mm package. Countless hours of suspension lab development and field testing created a refined mid-travel ripper that eats big terrain like a gravity fed beast, handles like a dream everywhere, and climbs like it has a motor.

  • PROGRESSIVE GEOMETRY—The S-Sizing geometry of the new Stumpjumper hits the progressive sweet spot. It’s long, low and slack, with a short offset fork and a steeper seat tube angle. These numbers combine to make your ride more stable, more carvealicious, more comfortable climbing, more better everywhere. With FlipChip adjustability you’re able to further fine-tune your fit, ensuring that your new Stumpjumper performs flawlessly on whatever terrain you choose.

  • RIDER-FIRST ENGINEERED™—Rider-First Engineered™ frames use a size-specific approach to ride characteristics that ensures benchmark handling and flawless performance, regardless of frame or rider size. Whether you’re a jump-happy grom riding an S1, or a DH-fiend giant in need of the lengthy S6, you’ll experience the same ride traits – rail-sharp cornering and balanced front and rear stiffness – at the lightest-possible weight, And by light, we mean real light: 2,250 grams (S-Works, S-3 size, with rear shock).

  • SWAT™—We introduced the SWAT™ door on the Stumpjumper in 2016, adding room IN your frame for those “oh sh**t” necessities like pumps and spare tubes, and immediately rendering jersey pockets redundant.

Insane

I just picked this up on sale for about $200 more than the base stumpjumper 15 model. The bike is a monster. I’ve only ever ridden hardtails and this bike rips. So comfortable too. If you don’t mind getting something a few years old, you absolutely cannot go wrong.

Engineering Marvel

The bike disappears mid-ride. "You think it. You do it." Again and again as an owner, I keep circling back to how "less is more." But, that's only ever really the case when things are just simply built "right" from the beginning. To be honest, I couldn't let myself buy this Stumpjumper when there's real FSR Horst Link available on the EVO. And yet, I couldn't commit to buying the EVO as it seemed as if it would primarily only be a "bruiser of a bike." Because for me personally, aside from regular weekly rides in the Midwest, I travel about 10-times a year out-of-state to conquer 50-miles of technical singletrack trail riding in a day. Thankfully, that's gonna be the kind of opportunity that this Stumpjumper excels at. From experience, showing up without the right bike is always going to be finding out way too late. Now, if you just so happen to have an engineering marvel with you... Well let's just say thanks again and again. Thanks.

Simply Awesome!!!

This bike is amazing. I’ve had it for two years and it still surprises me how predictable and how fast it is, and I ride at least 3x a week. I bought it after reading and watching lots of review videos, it performs way better than I thought it would.

Fantastic!

I'm in love with this bike!! Upgraded from a hardtail so this is my 1st full sus bike. This bike is so light and climbs like a goat. I would struggle to keep up on longer hills and my 1st ride on this bike I was cruising up the hills. I was able to ride more miles than usual and that was on the 1st ride after being sick for 2 weeks. Love how adjustable the brake levers, shifters etc are as I have really small hands. I'm 5'3" and was having a hard time finding a full sus small enough and the S1 fits great but I did cut the bars down.

I've got about 40 miles

I've got about 40 miles on this thing so far (primarily a combo of tech and flow in the Roanoke area with no shortage of climbing) so I'm still adjusting to the slacker geometry and the overall beefier feel compared to my old full suspension (2015 Salsa Horsethief Carbon 1). I'm still dialing in the cockpit so that factors into things as well. Although it is a carbon frame and lighter than its alloy counterpart, it still requires more input than my old bike to fully realize its potential. Not a big deal, just something to be aware if you're coming from a lighter FS bike. There's a Brandon Weed video that gets into that a little deeper. The bike is super solid and is a dream on the downhills. The slacker head tube angle requires more effort to get the front end up at the moment, but I'm chalking that up to the adjustment period. While it's a bit more active during climbing than my old bike, it still climbs well. I wound up cutting the bars down to 30cm total because the 280cm width put my arms out too wide for comfort, but that's due more to a history of shoulder injuries than any performance issues. The component spec is super solid for the sale price I paid. The wheels and tires do what they're supposed to do and the ratchet hub is nice and quiet. I'll be curious to see how the Roval wheels hold up, but they seem well built. The brakes work as expected coming from SRAM Guide RS brakes on my previous ride, not as grabby as Shimanos, with plenty of ability to modulate, which I realize may not be for everyone. The seat is a little firm for my liking and I'll probably swap that out. The SWAT storage is pretty sweet, but be aware that it will get wet inside (there's a weep hole at the bottom of the down tube), so if you're doing creek crossings and such, don't put anything in there that can't get wet, like documents or gremlins. All in all, it's a sweet rig and I look forward to getting the cockpit dialed in so I can get the most out of this ride.

a GREAT bike that could use with some finishing touches

This is the perfect front range Colorado bike for riding every trail, even the gnarly stuff despite the modest travel. I love riding this bike, it makes me excited to climb and descend. I have a couple gripes with the spec at this cost. A $6,000 bike that doesn't come setup tubeless is so weird. Lower cost and crappier bikes are coming tubeless. When I converted the wheels, I did have to apply my own rim tape. Your experience may vary here. Finally, I think the other parts spec is super mediocre. The hubs seem to lack engagement points, so ratcheting this bike can be tough. The seat is totally uncomfortable for me so that's getting replaced too. Just wish the parts were a bit better for this price.

Great all arounder

Been mountain back in for over 34 years and have owned over 20 full suspensions. it’s true things just keep getting better and better across-the-board. This is my third flex stay bike (Lynskey, Marin) and by far the most predictable. Installed Crankbrothers synthesis carbon wheels, Fizik saddle and Death Grips and it’s good to go. From the most aggressive at Tiger(Seattle) to tight uphill switchbacks it’s a keeper. Ride safe/fast!

This is a great trail

This is a great trail bike. I went from a 2019 Epic Evo to this bike - both are great bikes and capable in their own way. The biggest difference I've found so far is that the bottom bracket is a little lower on the Stumpy - this means more stability but also means that I smacked my pedals more than a few times on my first ride. Downhill is silky smooth. Uphill is really not so different than life on an aluminum Epic Evo - they're about the same weight and I never felt like I was running out of range in gearing.

Awesome trail bike!

I've had my 2022 SJ Expert for about 3 months and I'm having a blast! I'm coming from a 2018 Epic Comp and this is so much better and more fun on jumps. Ridding the Epic was had it thrills, but the SJ has that and more. Worth every penny! A++

I have has the SJ expert for a little over a month. I have ridden it most days and it has been amazing. Rips fast down but light and nimble enough for the tricky climbs up. I am 5'9 and the S3 fits great. Cut the bars significantly and will be changing the stem and getting some carbon wheels but damn this thing rides nice. Was debating between the Stump and the Spark but I am super glad I picked this one. Feel like it made me a better rider immediately!

Love this bike, the color is amazing. Very modest brown it looks black in most light. Im just under 5'8 and ordered the s3. I put a 40 mm stem on it and absolutely love the feel. Pedals like a beast and still rips dh. Would recommend the evo if its your only bike and you like to ride aggressively. This is my second bike so i wanted something i can pedal long distances.

SJ Expert - What a bike

I have ridden hard tails all my life and was worried about climbing with a full suspension. This bike climbs, descends and floats on trails.
