Painful tongue & annoying BOA strap

The upfront: I only wore these around the house for a few minutes. So, I cannot comment on how they pedal or hike-a-bike. But alas, I sent them back the next day due to two problems. The bad: two problems. First, the tongue was super uncomfortable. The inside corner of the tongue of both shoes pressed into my foot and the only way to relieve that was not to have the BOA strap snug. But that meant I'd lose the benefits of the strap rendering it worthless. This might simply be how these shoes fit on me. And maybe over time the tongue would soften up. But it was so painful that I couldn't imagine giving it that time. Second, I had read that the way the BOA strap sits on the shoe that it makes it challenging and a pain to keep it out of the way while tying the shoe laces. That was my experience too. I tried tucking it off to the side so that I could tie the shoelaces. But no such luck: it would keep popping off and getting in the way. The good: it's a really good-looking shoe and definitely a quality build like nearly everything that Specialized makes. It has a nice roomy toe box to accommodate swelling without feeling too big. The sole is firm but seemed to walk comfortably. Apart from the troubles I had with it, it seems like it would be a solid option for bikepackers or those of us who do long, all-day all mountain missions in the backcountry that require hike-a-bikes.

This shoe is well constructed

This shoe is well constructed and quality made. The foot sits deeper in the “well” so the sides and tongue can cause some discomfort since they are built so high and ride up on the foot and against the ankle. Time will tell whether this will subside and become more comfortable after wearing in.

Found these to fit true

Found these to fit true to sizing. They have been a bit uncomfortable in the first 5 hours of rides; the inside corner of the tongue lines up directly under the top eyelet (on my feet) causing a pressure point. This is even with trying to slightly more the tongue around. Starting to feel better. Otherwise comfortable shoes love the tread on the bottom for the occasional bike-hike. Have not tested the wet weather riding yet. Don’t love the laces and dial system together. Dial gets in the way of tying the laces but that is being picky and not enough of a reason to drop the rating in my view. j

First bike shoe. Actually using

First bike shoe. Actually using on flat pedals - I can feel the improvement over trainers/sneakers. If I want to move to clipless pedals in the future, I have that option. Comfortable.

Great for rain/shine road/mountain

First off I will say these are the most uncomfortable shoes until you hit the 100 mile mark. There are all kinds of pressure points, but they eventually break in and feel great. I live in the PNW so I ride in a lot of rain and my feet are always dry. Also, these do a good job of not heating up when it is warm out. For sizing, my running shoes (Altras) are US mens 11 which gives me a thumbs width of space off the big toe. For this shoe, I ordered a 45.5 which equates to a US mens 11.75 and that gives me the same thumbs width off the big toe. I would recommend getting a 1/2 to 3/4 size up from your running shoes. These do run small. When you are clipped in, the shoe stay in place. The boa dial is nice to keep your laces down and your heel in the shoe. I also like that you can walk around in these shoes without slipping on the cleat. I mainly ride gravel and mountain bikes with these shoes.
