How are carbon bikes made? Peter Denk talks Specialized Stumpjumper

Product Details

The Stumpjumper Pro is a top-tier, do-it-all, mind-terrain and horizon-expansion tool. You get the same FACT 11m carbon frame as our S-Works Stumpjumper, with class-leading light weight and all-new suspension kinematics. You get a bike that devours quad-searing climbs with ease, and absolutely scorches the descents. You get the picture: This thing rips.

Top that off with SRAM's XO Eagle Transmission 12-speed drivetrain and FOX Factory suspension and the “bang for the buck” factor is almost as rad as the bike itself.

  • THE TRAIL BENCHMARK—When we set out to design the all-new Stumpjumper, we pursued some hefty goals. It had to excel on any kind of trail, for every style of rider. To achieve that, we went after serious weight reduction without sacrificing durability, a stiff, responsive chassis that still rides light and lively, geometry that improves everyone’s riding, and the best suspension kinematics we know how to design. Turns out, you can have your cake and eat it too with the new Stumpjumper.

  • THE SWEETEST 130MM OF TRAVEL YOU’LL EVER RIDE—We massaged the kinematics of the Stumpjumper suspension to bring out the very best all-round performance possible in a 130mm package. Countless hours of suspension lab development and field testing created a refined mid-travel ripper that eats big terrain like a gravity fed beast, handles like a dream everywhere, and climbs like it has a motor.

  • PROGRESSIVE GEOMETRY—The S-Sizing geometry of the new Stumpjumper hits the progressive sweet spot. It’s long, low and slack, with a short offset fork and a steeper seat tube angle. These numbers combine to make your ride more stable, more carvealicious, more comfortable climbing, more better everywhere. With FlipChip adjustability you’re able to further fine-tune your fit, ensuring that your new Stumpjumper performs flawlessly on whatever terrain you choose.

  • RIDER-FIRST ENGINEERED™—Rider-First Engineered™ frames use a size-specific approach to ride characteristics that ensures benchmark handling and flawless performance, regardless of frame or rider size. Whether you’re a jump-happy grom riding an S1, or a DH-fiend giant in need of the lengthy S6, you’ll experience the same ride traits – rail-sharp cornering and balanced front and rear stiffness – at the lightest-possible weight, And by light, we mean real light: 2,250 grams (S-Works, S-3 size, with rear shock).

  • SWAT™—We introduced the SWAT™ door on the Stumpjumper in 2016, adding room IN your frame for those “oh sh**t” necessities like pumps and spare tubes, and immediately rendering jersey pockets redundant.

Great bike

I haven't had to change a single thing on this bike since I got it and it rides like a dream. It's stable while still being easy to maneuver, which gives me a lot more confidence than I had on my previous bikes. This one's a keeper.

Stump jumper pro t-type

This bike is awesome! Rides over small bumps very smooth. Pedals great both in the shock open position and middle position. I changed the flip chip to the high position and like the handling better, I may be in the minority there. I changed the chainring to a 30 tooth, haven’t ridden it yet since I did it. My previous 2 bikes were 30 x 52 and didn’t quite feel like I was in the right gear. The frame is great - I like the swat box and tool on the bottle cage. I wish the bottle cage were a little higher up on the tube so it was easier to get to.

Perfect Trail Bike

160 miles or so in on my Stumpy Pro T-type and I have nothing but great things to say. I ride mostly old school New England tech trails and this bike is awesome as delivered. Light and fast build, there is nothing I feel I’d change or upgrade. The T-type transmission is fantastic…definitely surprised me how much that makes a difference. The glove box design is super convenient for local rides. I have my essentials all in there, so it’s easy to hop on and head to the trails and has eliminated my need to carry a pack on most of my rides. The bike is very maneuverable while also being stable and confidence inspiring. Loads of new PRs on this bike while having a blast.

Nicest Bike I've ever had - Concerned about the paintjob

Been riding Specialized exclusively for many years. Everything about this bike is just awesome: The geometry, the weight, the components - all stellar. The paint, however, has me concerned. The matte finish collects dust and dirt very quickly and it is very visible. More importantly, I'm concerned about durability. Took my first ride last week and a small rock landed on the top tube and left a 1/8" diameter chip in the paint. The primer below is pure white so obviously it stuck out like a sore thumb. I've colored it with a permanent marker I found at a hobby store and will probably cover it with some sort of sticker, so it doesn't drive me completely crazy. I'll be keeping a close eye on the rest of the frame. Other than that, I love the bike.

Easily a 5-star bike

Dating myself, but I've easily owned 30+ hi-end MTBs over the past 36 years. Many different brands. Strayed to single pivots six years ago after an SJ and then Epic, but came back to an SJ Expert two months ago. Dealer put on Roval carbons. What a confidence inspiring bike this is! It does not float or sag. It eats up our rocks and dips here in the desert SW like magic. I won't be looking elsewhere when I feel the need to replace this one.

Awesome ride!

After owning Epic Evos for the last 3 years I decided to try a Stumpjumper for the extra cush. I could not be happier. This bike climbs great and descends even better. I am super stoked with the Stumpjumper pro.

Outstanding Bike

Like the previous review said: This bike is great! It's silent, fast, and loves to rail corners and tech. Can't recommend it enough.

Fast and Silent

This SJ Pro is fast and quiet. I can hear my tires like never before. Who cares? The auditory feedback from my tires allows me to corner faster and better manage my body position and "personal kinematics" in rock gardens. The silence has been a more significant game changer than I would have guessed possible—plus, it feels so good to ride a silent bike. Due to the additional travel, I thought it might be slower than my Transition Spur, but at least on the rocky and rooty terrain here, it's been faster and more composed. The new SRAM Transmission is all that and a sack of chips. I love feeling "in the bike" and railing corners, but the lowish bottom bracket does lead to more pedal strikes. It's the best trail bike I've ever had, and I've had more than a few. Special thanks to Ivory, JD, Mark + others at MOAB Bikes in Murfreesboro, TN, for getting this bike in so quickly & excellent service.
